Why can we talk AI with the Randy chatbot?

Discovering the Bots: This is the guideline of the last episode of our Telegram Guide. The summary we had come to? A thousand bots, for a thousand platforms, for a thousand possible uses. The Bots, in fact, are not the absolute heritage of Telegram (nor Messenger), but they pose themselves as smart agents with their own identity, sometimes found on this or that platform, for this or that purpose and in the most different configurations.

If ideal, to our notice, it is their use in Telegram, however, do not forget their “independent” nature. Nor confuse them, as often happens, with other realities such as Chatbots or tools implemented with Artificial Intelligence.

Even of these concepts you hear more and more talking now. Are we sure, however, that we know what we’re talking about?

Bot, Chatbot, #AI: Discover the Differences!

Too often it is talk about Bot, Chatbot and Artificial intelligence. What However, there is a difference between the three concepts and, in particular, between Bot and Chatbot? It’s not just a matter of style: regardless of the fact that, when talking about it, it is not possible to leave out such an important reflection, what we’re going to say is going to be very useful right on the plan of Bot and Chatbot for Telegram.

“There is a fundamental difference,” he explains for example here. “At its core level, a Bot is simply an application that does automated tasks, according to a set of algorithms.” Each equipment has in it, somehow, embedded bots: think about the reminders you keep in your smartphone and that, periodically during the day, warn you as soon as the hour of this or that date, this or that meeting, are getting closer.

In short, Bots are not they are certainly new. Many, on the contrary, are already used to automate a series of tasks: offering predefined answers through self-service web each Once questions or requests for assistance arrive, mechanize the forwarding of an email to the most appropriate person to receive and deal with it, and so on.

The Chatbots, instead, are versions of Bots designed to be able to have a ‘conversation’. What does it mean? That they must be able to understand an input, as much voice as text, and then process it and provide to a response during the conversation. “The Chatbot Discussions lately they have been wasted, especially since Facebook made it much more easy for companies to create and develop on Facebook Messenger and WhatsApp tools like that. At the same time, customer appreciation towards Siri or Amazon Alexa brought an increasing demand. So much more, So, the Chatbots are embedded in smartphones or voice assistants.”

Here’s the point decisive: that of Chatbot is a technology basic, which is at the foundations of the instrument Chatbot. Vice versa the way through which the message brought by the Chatbot — Instant Messaging via text or voice message — it is, in fact, simply a medium: the way, the way through which a content is brought to its destination, but without changing its substance.

For a Chatbot working well means being able to follow the key to Intelligence Artificial request and thus provide a relevant, useful, rich response meaning, that goes to solve the problem for which you have been contact us. This means he has to use techniques that are fairly close to the natural language and have access to a globally rich basic knowledge, with all the information needed to answer the most different and varied possible.

We’re not going deep here, for now, in the mechanisms of Artificial Intelligence, a ‘future’ that, if on the one hand it seems already “yesterday”, so much it is drawn as already operatively here, on the other hand it is, in reality, far beyond to come, at least in its actual form. All the more so in Telegram.

You still want one definition? ‘Artificial Intelligence’ consists in the study of ‘how produce machines with the same qualities of the human mind, such as ability to understand human language, recognize drawings, solve problems, learn.”

Let’s not forget however never as many times repeated by Ted Livingston: “Intelligence Artificial is not the Killer App for Bots. It is no coincidence that it prevents the bots from developing their best. The chat is the new browsers and bots are the new sites. Write a Bot once and he’ll work always many, different channels.” In short, all you need is a Bot — nor on Telegram or elsewhere — be implemented with Artificial Intelligence for work best: on the contrary.

The Expert Opinion

In my book “Telegram Why” I got to to interview one of the Masters sector, Giorgio Robino, Researcher, Designer, Developer in Conversational AI, author of the blog on Conversational Computing with VComp, already creator and organizer of the “first Italian event on dialogue systems in natural language”, #convcomp2016. His words are illuminating. now as well as when I started to take my first steps in this sector, among 2015 and 2016: then, thanks to him, between intense exchanges of emails, clarifications via social networks and, for my part, faithful reading his blog, certain “dark forest” immediately made it clearer. Like this one we are discussing today. “For Bot or Chatbot today we mean any software, any program dialogue in natural language, with human-machine interface or machine-machine, textual or, in the near future, vocal,” Robino explained. “Yes It’s a general concept,” he said, “suitable for a simple Chatbot like @grocerylistBot, that on Telegram that keeps the shopping list, as well as in Mitsuku, created by Steve Worswick, with instead of a pseudo-human personality.” Several times, in fact, we have carefully distinguished actors and playgrounds of this new game: on the one hand the Bots, on the other the various platforms implementation of the same — Apps or SMS, Messenger or Slack, Telegram and how much more.

Another fundamental distinction, however, is precisely that between Chatbots and #AI, Artificial Intelligence. “Chatbot is a broad spectrum of software, with or without Artificial Intelligence.” In short, a Chatbot does not have to be intelligent to define itself as such: nor to function and provide even innovative services. Paradoxically, on the contrary, there is more at stake on these types of Chatbots without #AI. “To make a simple e-commerce, a Bot without AI is good.”

And if you he really wants an ‘academy definition’, the DNA of the Chatbots, the them “map genetics”, can be scanned and defined according to 3 generations, the 3 types of Chatbots present to date:

  • Command-based;
  • Conversation-Based, Conversational;
  • AI-based, with their own personality, knowledge of the user, able to generate inferences”, to reach logical conclusions with a form of ‘reasoning’.

What is it meant?

  • Command-based Chatbots: “It’s the current average level of bots. They’re moving. via fixed commands, often verbs preceded by the sign ‘/’, the slash.” Examples? ‘/run X’, ‘/do Y’ etc. are robots, tiny machines running a few simple command actions.” No less decisive, however, in fact. Own this is the hot front of the #ConvComm, of the Conversational Commerce that Chris Messina talks about and on which everyone is aiming for. “This first category falls into in fact also the Bots transactional, called to execute transactions payment or other typical e-commerce workflows. Example: Search is Put in Cart is Choose address is Choose time of delivery is Finish the order.” The centrality of these Chatbots, on Telegram in general, is commenting for itself.
  • Conversation-Based, Conversational Chatbots. “It’s the Bots with which you can have a conversation as with a human interlocutor: a friend, store salesman. The Bot Is Ready to Interpret Questions About a Spectrum wide range of topics. They are the virtual agents, assistant or concierge type.” Illustrious examples, with applications and business side implications that are they derived? “Angela, to example, talking cat with great success.” Simple games, virtual entities entertainment. But there is perhaps someone who doubts the potential entertainment and gamification in terms of business for Chatbots similar — in general and as they are implemented in Telegram?
  • AI-based Chatbots: “This is Bot evolved conversationals, can be modeled to the measure of the interlocutor, with different personality depending on the have a lady, a boy or an engineering student in front of them.” AND especially cognitive, able to make reasoning. With countless potential returns, business side, like with Amy and T.ay, Microsoft, for a long time at success in China with its Xiaoice and for which even greater triumphs are expected with the #AI projects, but also Google, with the AlphaGo project, Deep-Mind-based Artificial Intelligence, or more IBM Watson with the center Watson Health for Developing Applied Cognitive Solutions to health science and in the future to PA. Not to mention more than known examples: like Amazon Echo with Alexa, Apple with Siri, or Viv, conceived precisely from the creator of Siri, born to… assist you in your whole life, all life. In fact, Viv takes his name from ‘Live’ and, in his offices, the numbers’ 6 ‘and’ 5 ‘shine: in Latin represented precisely as’ VI ‘and ‘V’.

“Today we are we are at an early stage,” Robino summarized, “with Chatbots typical of the Generation I. There are already all the skills and technical tools necessary to arrive, within a few years, to a complete development of the Chatbots by Generation III’. That’s why there’s so much talk about ‘gold rush’. The haste there is, and we understand the reason, to arrive first to plant the flag.

“The problem lies in the Bot’s brain, not in the mouth with which he can express himself.” In other words, even a sophisticated, third-generation Chatbot could be implemented in Telegram (as well as virtually, in fact, in each platform). But if you consider the many advantages on the Customer Experience and Employee side Developable engagement in Telegram, we can imagine the scenarios ready to open by integrating its own Chatbots equipped with #AI into the Telegram Channels.

Coming back to us, however, how can we understand the Bots inside Telegram? Which is theirs nature and the typical characteristics that distinguish them from Bot and Chatbot used on other platforms? We’ll see it in the next appointment of the Our Guide to Telegram.
