Where to buy a yoga mat?

It is far from obvious to choose your yoga mat. The features of a yoga mat are many. There are all dimensions, materials, thicknesses, etc. Buying a carpet can also be a small investment. Do you have a regular practice and are looking for the perfect mat to accompany you in your yoga sessions? Do you need a carpet that’s easy to carry? Is it important for you to be able to run your web and asanas safely? 1. The importance of the choice of material

Choosing your yoga mat according to the material is fundamental. Indeed, some components of the mats are not suitable for practicing yoga. This is why a fitness mat can not replace a yoga mat. It is better to avoid PVC yoga mats (because they are toxic) and choose an ecofriendly yoga mat, that is, made of environmentally friendly materials (rubber, burlap, TPE). Many responsible eco yoga brands offer it. Regarding texture , it depends on what you prefer. The roughest are often the most adherent. Boycott slippery materials, as your practice will not be secure. If your hands sweat, for example, you might slip. You will not be able to perform all yoga postures, or at least, not properly.

Yoga is a discipline that demands concentration. You must constantly listen to your body. If your thoughts are focused on not slipping, you will be dissipated and you can hurt yourself more easily.

2. The weight of the carpet

Choosing your carpet according to the weight is important. If you have to carry it with you all day before going to the studio, it is better to turn to a lightweight yoga mat. On the other hand, you will have less stability. 4mm thick mats are the most standard. You can practice different types of yoga. Stability will not be reduced. You can take thinner mats, but they will have to have good grip and be non-slip. Avoid mats more than 6mm thick. If you have sweaty hands, your carpet will turn into your worst enemy.

4. The type of yoga practiced

I advise you not to pay much attention to how often you practice. Whether you practice once or three times a week, you must have a good mat to enjoy your yoga class to the fullest. Generally, yogis who practice Vinyasa yoga (complex and fast movements), Iyengar yoga, Kundalini or Ashtanga, both considered dynamic yoga, need a mat with good grip, and not too thick (to keep balance). On the other hand, for Nidra yoga or Hatha yoga (more traditional and softer yoga), it is possible to turn to a comfortable yoga mat (and therefore thicker). Indeed, in the case of Nidra yoga, group classes are practiced mostly sitting.

5. The brand of yoga, an importance in the selection of its mat

You will choose a yoga mat, but not only. You will also choose a brand of yoga. Orient yourself to specialized brands. Indeed, I am convinced that technical products designed by people who practice the discipline in question better meet expectations than a lambda product. 6. The price, indicator for choosing your yoga mat

Whether it’s good news or bad news, the price of a yoga mat matters. You can buy a cheap yoga mat, easily. For example, Decathlon yoga mat does not cost more from 20€. However, it is extremely slippery and is not slip resistant. To make it simple, your mat will not stick to the floor and your hands will slip. It will therefore most likely be necessary to pay more than €50 to get a good yoga mat. If you’re new and you don’t know if you’re going to like yoga, just take the yoga mats from your studio. This will be better than buying a low-end carpet. If the hygienic side disturbs you, you can put a yoga towel on top.

7. The pleasure of a lovely yoga mat

Although this point is more futile and less technical than the previous 6, it remains important. Indeed, you need to feel like doing your yoga session.
