Does cinnamon lower blood sugar levels?
“ Some interesting evidence tends to confirm this, but opinions are still divided,” says Brooke Bulloch, a dietician professional from Saskatoon. In 2012, a systematic review of Cochrane — an independent global network of researchers interested in health issues — analyzed 10 random clinical trials. Result? Overall, cinnamon did not control blood sugar levels in diabetics better than placebo. A 2013 Cochrane review was more positive, stating that cinnamon did reduce blood glucose content. However, the dose to be consumed and the ideal duration of treatment remained to be clarified. In short, what does that mean? That there is not enough evidence yet to draw conclusions.
Does cinnamon prevent Alzheimer’s disease?
Two short-term studies suggest that cinnamon may have modified molecules associated with Alzheimer’s disease in rats with type 2 diabetes. The keyword here is “rats.” “We can’t necessarily rely on the reaction of rats to predict that of humans,” says Bulloch. Further research needs to be carried out in humans.
Does cinnamon reduce cholesterol?
“ The research is promising,” Bulloch says. A 2013 meta-analysis showed that cinnamon reduces cholesterol and triglycerides, a kind of lipids in the blood. It also lowers LDL cholesterol (bad cholesterol) and increases HDL cholesterol (good cholesterol). However, this study has some limitations. First, it was conducted only on people with diabetes. Second, the dose of cinnamon ingested and the duration of consumption were very variable. Several studies have found that changes in our lifestyle habits — such as losing weight and eating less trans fats — can reduce the rate of cholesterol.
Can cinnamon fight inflammation?
In a Petri box, yes. At hamsters and mice? Maybe. In humans? We don’t know. Researchers believe there would be a link between chronic inflammation and heart disease, cancer and arthritis. Fighting inflammation in general is therefore a good thing. Unfortunately, the effects of diet on inflammation are not clear. “It is known that cinnamon contains antioxidants, but it is not clear what role it plays against inflammation,” says Bulloch. Does she make a big difference? I have no idea.”
Can cinnamon fight yeast infections?
Laboratory research showed that cinnamon is antifungal. This study focused on cinnamon essential oils and proved that oils fight mushrooms growing on decaying wood. But no research has been done on living beings. “So we can’t draw a conclusion,” Bulloch says.
